Selecting The Right Workout Apparel For A Good Workout

What one wears during exercise is as important as the exercise itself, because choosing the wrong workout apparel can result in an uncomfortable exercise experience. There are many choices, just as there are many types of exercise, but perhaps the most important thing to remember is to choose apparel that feels good to you and doesn't get in the way of your activity. Many people prefer wearing loose-fitting clothing during exercise, such as shorts and t-shirts. Others would rather wear more fitted clothing.

If you are doing yoga, for example, you might be more comfortable in workout apparel made from a stretchy fabric. If cycling, you should avoid loose pant legs that could get caught in the pedals. Wide-leg pants can be tricky during aerobic exercise if they are too long, because exercisers run the risk of tripping over the pants or getting them caught on the feet.

No matter what type of workout apparel you ultimately choose, it should fit properly during a wide variety of activity levels, without riding up, chafing, or sliding down. Another important consideration is coverage. You'll want to think about ensuring that your clothing doesn't show more skin than you want. For instance, in aerobic exercise where you might be jumping and raising your arms above your head, do you want to wear a shirt that covers your belly at all times, or does it matter to you that your stomach might be exposed? The best way to determine the proper fit in all workout apparel is to try out some typical body movements while trying on the clothing. Stretch your arms over your head, squat, sit down, twist, or contort your body into whatever position you anticipate doing during the actual exercise, just to make sure that the clothing will still be comfortable.

Outdoor exercise, especially during the summer, should include light-colored clothes, and perhaps a hat as well to protect from the sun's harmful rays. Certain types of workout apparel are made of special synthetic fabrics that wick sweat away from the body, which is especially comfortable during warmer weather or during exercise that makes you sweat a lot. These fabrics keep sweat away from your skin, helping it evaporate more quickly, which helps the body stay cooler during exercise and avoids that uncomfortable sticky feeling. Fabrics that don't breathe should be avoided, because they will keep your body temperature too high during exercise.

Selecting the right shoes is just as important as choosing comfortable clothing, and perhaps even more so. There are dozens of different types of exercise shoes on the market, each created especially for a specific activity or sport. You'll want to choose a shoe that is appropriate for the type of exercise you'll be doing, so that your feet will have the proper support. Similarly, effective workout apparel includes appropriate socks. Socks that are too thick, or too thin, can lead to blisters on the feet; thus, investing in a good pair of socks can be worth your while.
